The inspiration for the Bucky character came from Simon’s gardener Raùl Sutula, who was a homosexual Mexican immigrant who had been kicked out of the military after revealing his sexual orientation. The outrage towards the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy inspired Simon to create a character to expose America’s prejudices. Ironically however, Simon felt that readers would not take well to a Mexican sidekick of Captain America, and therefore ‘caucasionized’ him to look more like a WASP. Evidence of Raùl’s influence, however, can be seen in Bucky’s impeccable sense of fashion, flamboyant attitude, and incredibly short shorts.
UPDATE: This is a good one. Edit was revised after 43 minutes with the comment, "reverted vandalism - clearly untrue information, the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy wasn't instituted until 50 years after Bucky was created; Bucky also isn't gay"
