In 1998, Brooks & Dunn conducted a scientific study to test their hypothesis that latchkey kids are more susceptible to external stimuli than children who are constantly monitored. While still not completely understood, there appears to be a strong correlation between variable factors in a latchkey kid’s home life and the resultant effect on numerous psychological disorders that can be developed later in life. For example, when the family of a female latchkey kid has more than two cats, the young girl has a 90% chance of developing Crazy Catladyitis, a disorder in which the victim hoards an impossibly numerous amount of cats. If the latchkey kid has an abusive stepfather who is likely to come home at any given time, the child is 46% more likely to become a ninja. And if a male latchkey kid is given an internet connection, there is a 98% chance that he will become a chronic masturbator.
